ScottK's Where's George? Blog

The "Blog" That Ate My Where's George Profile:

When I started creating my Where's George profile, it began as nothing more than a couple of blurbs entered over a pretty long period of time. When I started entering bills at a greater rate in September, 2006, I started adding to my profile in a format that quickly developed into a bit of a mini-blog.

Over the course of the subsequent ten months or so I added more "non-blog" stuff, but the meat of the profile continued to be the blog section - a narative of my George journey. I used it to celebrate milestones, log progress, and my own personal place to vent. But by the summer of 2007, for various reasons my blogging started waning, and eventually I just gave up on it. (See the last entry for more details.)

In addition to my waning interest, the size of the blogging section was eating up the bulk of the 64k characters Hank allows for profile text. So I have moved the whole section to this page hosted on my own web site. It's probably not of interest to anyone other than myself, but I just couldn't bring myself to just delete it outright. So here it will remain, probably defunct, for time immemorial.

I've laid this out in reverse chronoligical order, so if you really want to follow the progress, scroll down to the entry dated 3/19/2004. If you just want to see the ultimate demise of the blog, you can just check out the top post or two. Or, if you actually, like, have a life and real things to do, skip the whole thing altogether. Trust me, I won't be offended.

8/5/2007:

I think I'm kind of "over" this blogging section. When I started doing it, it was just additional bits of info I added once in a while when I wasn't very active. Then, a year ago this month, I transformed in a couple months time to an active, and then an avid, Georger. At that time, as hits went from very occasional - a few a month - to more regular, it was an exciting way to track, if only for myself, new milestones, records, notable hits, etc. But now, with the average month seeing well over 200 bills entered, daily hits the rule and not the exception, my Georging has pretty much slipped into a routine. While every new state, country, even county seemed a celebration worthy of sharing with the world back in the day, now its just more of a "hey, cool" moment.

Also, the other purpose this blogging thing served for myself was a place to go back and remember certain things that were a bit harder to call up quickly within the WheresGeorge web site, as well as a way to track the progress of my bill entry counts, hit counts and George Scores over time. However, back at the end of last year I began developing a Where's George spreadsheet for myself. While it started off pretty simply, this spring I put quite a bit of work into it and developed it into a pretty powerfull tool for tracking all sorts of stats and info. Probably the best section is a complete, and enhanced, version of the "Your Bills" page. But its not limited by the restrictions that Hank has placed on the Your Bills page - where all the stats are "bill centric". I now have instant access to hit-specific information, such as hits per month, cumulative hits (instead of cumulative bills hit), and current hit streak, that can't be found on Where's George. I can even, with a little temporary editing, recreate my stats for pretty much any point in time. So posting my stats, as I did in most of these postings, just isn't necessary for myself anymore. And, while it would pump my ego a little to think that anyone else actually cared or tracked them, I'm pretty certain that there's nobody out there who had done so. (If you have been... sorry. Let me know, I'd love to hear it - my ego can always use a little boost.)

So, the point of the above rambling is just to say that, in all probablility, there will be very few, if any, blog updates from here on out. I'm going to move this section to the bottom of the profile, just because I can's see deleting it, at least at the moment. Myself, I think the more interesting section of this profile at this point is the maps, so I think it will make more sense to have them closer to the top. And I'll probably start to develop an "interesting hits" section or three with simple links to things like milestones, foreign country hits, etc. Eventually, if I find enough other stuff to add, this section may fade away altogether, or maybe I'll move it off to a web page on my own site and just provide a link. But today, I'll just begin its slow march into the ether with a trip to the bottom of the page...

Oh, and one last stats table - just for old times sake...

6/9/2007:

Wow, its been a looooong time since I've added anything here. "Highlights" since my last posting are probably too numerous (and boring) to count. But I suppose, if I had to, I could come up with a few worth mentioning in passing.

May was a record month - a nice rebound from the slow end I had to April: I entered the most bills I've ever entered in a month, 360, and got the most hits I've ever received in a month, 53. June has started out much slower - only 10 hits and 28 entered bills so far. (But I've got a strap to enter today.) The only new state I've added in the last month is New Hampshire - a very nice, but lonely, addition to my state hit map. I have gotten a lot of new counties and a lot of second hits in states such as Ohio, Kentuky, Indiana, Illinois and Missouri. And I'm just short of 150 hits and 30 counties in North Carolina.

Oh, and I got a hit on the 2000th milestone bill mentioned in my last entry below - that was kind of cool.

Probably my personal Georging highlights for the last month is the work I've done on my spreadsheet. I've added a ton of information, developed macros to automate the processes of adding to and updating it, and I've even managed to replicate (and enhance) most of the Your Bills page. Pretty cool, if I may say so myself.

I've also slightly enhanced my marking with a "custom" signiture stamp:

Why? Well, I was looking for something that might sort of be uniquely "me", and when I found this hand stamp, the idea just seemed to fit:

So, that's what I've been up to the last month and a half, Georging-wise. I warned you it would be boring.

(I'm running out of room in my profile for all this text, and I want the maps to be a little closer to the top, and I'm just generally ready for a little bit of a change in this space. So a redesign might be in store here someday soon....)

4/28/2007:

Milestone time again: This time, I've entered my 2000th bill. (And I got to use a milestone bill for the first time.) In addition, on 4/13 I got my 100th hit in North Carolina, and I got my second international hit in Jubayl, Jordan. And within the last week or so I cracked the top 100 Georgers in North Carolina - and to my surprise I've stayed there (there are a lot of more accomplished Georgers who have dropped below me just because of inactivity - a half dozen refreshes could send me back into triple digits). On the down side, my hits are waaaaay down - my "hits the last 10 days" is down to 6 hits - the lowest its been since early January. Here are my current stats:

You have entered 2,000 Bills worth $8,433

4/12/2007:

My second big milestone in a week: my 200th hit. Six months ago, when I had started entering more heavily and hits were still few and far between, I didn't think I was ever even going to make it to 100 hits. Making it to 200 feels real nice. :)

You have entered 1,886 Bills worth $7,940

4/7/2077:

I probably cracked my last big George Score milestone for a while: 800. My 200th hit should be somewhere on the horizon, hopefully next week. I also finally got my 20th state: Washington. Its also my longest distance traveled within the continental US. Oh, and a slightly more unusual acheivement: with this hit in Rutherford County, NC, I now have hits in each of the counties which border my home county. On a mildly down note, a hitless Resurrection Sunday broke a 6 day hit streak. Oh well, there's always the next streak. This week's summary:

You have entered 1,874 Bills worth $7,902

4/3/2007:

A noteworthy event: My first international/purple hit!

   Ellesmere Port, United Kingdom

It started its journey in Horse Shoe, North Carolina, USA, traveled to the old city of Jerusalem, Israel, and was then kidnapped and transported to the UK. It'll be interesting to see where it gets to next.

3/30/2007:

It's been a really busy month - I took a 12 day trip to Israel. I spent about 70 or 80 EMSed bills there or enroute. So far I haven't gotten any international hits from the effort, but I did get a new state from one that probably got spent in Chicago: Missouri. Hopefully a few purple hits will trickle in some time soon.

While I was gone, the hits rolled in pretty regularly, ending a mini-dry spell just before leaving. By this week, I had a record 10-day hit streak. I got a bunch of new county hits in New York, Tennessee, Texas, South Carolina and Florida, plus the one new state with Missouri. And I got my fourth and fifth FRB Bingos. FRB Bingo doesn't have quite the thrill it once did.

I had kind of been hoping to get my George Score above 800 by the end of this month, but I'm about 8 points short, and without about 16 hits in the next two days, it ain't gonna happen. Soon though. And I should be able to top 200 hits before the end of next month. My bill entry rate is down though, and will probably stay down for a while, with funds in short supply after the trip. Here's the current score card:

You have entered 1,836 Bills worth $7,635
Bills with hits: 158 Total hits: 177
Hit rate: 8.61% Slugging Percentage: 9.64% (total hits/total bills)

Your State Rank in North Carolina is: 110 out of 2,750 [96.0]

3/3/2007:

A few notable events: I got my 150th hit today. So I guess that makes about 50 hits in a little over 5 weeks. Not bad. It also put my George Score over 775. I'm hoping to break 800 by the end of the month.

I got my first 3-hit bill this past week. Its floating around Georgia for the time being. It was a nice way to break my first 3-day hitless streak in almost 2 months.

I got my first California hit since October 2005 (shortly after I moved from SoCal), and the first one on a bill entered in NC.

I entered my 7th strap today, in addition to a cache of 20 five-dollar bills. I'm going to take a trip to Israel soon, so I'm planning on taking a bunch of these so I can plant some internation bills, and maybe get my first purple hit soon.

2/20/2007:

Mostly just updating because its been a couple weeks. Probably my biggest "news" of that time was a nine day hit streak from 2/1 through 2/9 - obliterating my old, and oft repeated, record of three days. And after that one ended on the 10th, I followed up with my second longest streak of six days from 2/11 through 2/16. Right now I'm in a bit of a slump - after almost a month of averaging two hits a day, I'm back down to the 1-a-day range.

A couple of other notable hits were this one in snow-covered New York, my first hit in that state, and this one from the heart of Alabama, also a new state. This puts me at 18 states. I've determined not to even think about state bingo until I hit around 25 states. Really, I'm not thinking about it. At all.

Oh, and I have cracked the top 120 in North Carolina (though that's tenuous - I think more people have recently passed me going down due to inactivity than I've passed going up), as well as broken solidly into the to 5000 overall on the site, and into the 90th percentile.

You have entered 1,656 Bills worth $6,883

2/6/2007:

A few updates and milestones to start the week...

For the milestones, this hit gave me my 120th hit, and put my George Score over 750. It also gave me a new county in Georgia. I also got a hit in Nevada, my first new state in almost three weeks. Kind of a cool hit too - a bellhop at the Bellagio, which I've been to. I like hits where I can make a sort of personal connection. This guy (or gal) gave me my 50th hit in North Carolina. I also have a 5 day hit streak going (2/1 through 2/5, so far), which is my longest yet. Hits have slowed a little - I've had as many as 20 hits on my "hits the last 10 days" listing, and I'm down to 14 right now - but they seem to be spreading out a little, which is nice. And my hit rate has gotten back up over 7%. It dropped drastically when I started really increasing the amount of bills I was entering back in September, but its now starting to recover.

As for updates, I've spiffed up this blog section a little, making it a bit more readable. And I've updated my maps to be more current. Might be time for a more widespread overhaul - the whole thing is getting a bit bland looking to me.

Current stats are as follows:

You have entered 1,505 Bills worth $6,394
Bills with hits: 107 Total hits: 120
Hit rate: 7.11% Slugging Percentage: 7.97% (total hits/total bills)
George Score: 750.07
Your rank (based on George Score) is #5,122

Your State Rank in North Carolina is: 124 out of 2,693 [95.4]

2/2/2007:

This morning I entered my 1500th bill. I missed getting it in before the end of January by two bills. Not that that's a big deal, but for whatever psychological reason, I like when round numbers and end-of-periods line up.

Regardless of that, I did set another new record for bills entered in a month: 320. (I've set increasing records for each of the last four months. But that will probably end in February, since I just got a strap and still have about 90 bills from it, plus the shortness of the month.) I also shattered my record for hits in a month with 35, more than doubling the 15 hit record in December.

Other recent milestones include my 100th bill hit (as opposed to my 100th hit below), my second FRB Bingo with this hit (which also came with an offer for a free tan ), my first 4-day hit streak from 1/24 through 1/27, and an X block hit. A sort of sad milestone: I reached the point sometime recently where each new hit raises my George Score less than one point. From here on, it gets to be slow climbing.

Stats for the beginning of February:

You have entered 1,500 Bills worth $6,338
Bills with hits: 102 Total hits: 113
Hit rate: 6.80% Slugging Percentage: 7.53% (total hits/total bills)

1/24/2007:

Woohoo! Time to celebrate: I got my 100th hit today. And I was also able to time things to do my update as it was at 100 - and only minutes before another hit came in - so I got a nice, round bill report (not that I couldn't have faked it, but, ya know, its nice to know I didn't have to). That also gets my George Score, which has been rising pretty steadilly the last couple weeks, up over 730, and (hopefully) cements my position in the top 130 Georgers in North Carolina. (It shouldn't be long before I crack the top 5000 nationally.) I've also reached 15 states with hits, and I'm well on my way to getting the South East filled in on my US hit map. Still no significant hit streak yet though. I've put several three day strings together this month, but they've all been separated by one or two hitless days. It'll come soon... I can smell it. So, here are the numbers for this auspicious occasion:

You have entered 1,372 Bills worth $6,008

Not a whole lot: Added state hit maps to my profile, reached 1200 bills entered, starting to get somewhat regular hits, better than 1 every other day, on average.

1/3/2007:

This bill just gave me not one but two milestones: It puts my George Score over 700, and it also gives me my first Federal Reserve Bingo! I'm stoked, even if nobody else knows. :) Missed making the 700 before the end of last year by one hit, but better late than never. I also seem to finally be solidly in the 130s in my state ranking. I've been bobbing up and down in the 140s since my GS was down around 630. And, I don't pay as much attention to this, but I noticed that I've also broken into the top 6000 nationally in the last couple of weeks. This puts me up 1000 places since I started saving the stats here back in late September.

1/1/2007 12:30 AM:

Happy new year! I missed getting a George Score of 700 by the end of the year by one measly point! Oh well, a new year, with new goals and new possibilities. On the good side, I set a new record for hits in a month with 15, got a little (but record) hit streak of three days, and set another record in bills entered with 292 (which would have been higher, but I was away on vacation for the last 10 days and haven't entered anything for that time).

Here's to a happy new year to you, anybody who's reading this, and many happy hits.

Here's my end-of-the-year stats for the end of 2006:

You have entered 1,178 Bills worth $5,004

12/19/2006:

Today I reached another of my goofy milestones. Just over a month ago, I posted that I had, at that point, entered as many bills this year as I had in the previous 2.5 years I have been registered on WG (356 each). As of this afternoon, I have now enter 2 times as many bills this year as I had previously entered. (And most of that is actually in the last four months. And most of that four months is in the last two months. ) At any rate, that's 356 pre-2006 entries, and 712 2006 entries, for a grand total of 1068 entered bills. Now to enter that strap I got today, so I can get December's number of entries above November's. Then it might be time for a bit of a break. Maybe...

You have entered 1,068 Bills worth $4,841
Bills with hits: 55 Total hits: 64

12/08/2006:

My newest milestone: I finally have a comma in my number of bills entered! OK, so that doesn't count in the unofficially official Comma Club - it takes a comma in your George Score to gain that prestigious membership - but I'll take what I can get. I emptied out my change jar a couple of weeks ago, and accumulated over $100 in change (hey, its a big jar, and it was overflowing). So I "earmarked" that to use to get my next (second) strap of singles. Then I noticed that I was closing in on 900 bills entered, and decided it would be cool to enter a strap to reach exactly 1,000 bills. So it took a little fanagling, and when I forgot to bring the coin rolls to the bank a couple of days, I really had to get creative to not get extra bills to be entered. (I know - I could have gotten bills and just not entered them, but that's just the way I am.) But yesterday I finally got the strap, and last night I entered a final $20 bill I had been holding onto for a day which put me at 900, followed by the strap. (It was really annoying when I got to the end of the strap and the total was still only 999 - I managed to skip one durring entry.) So, there you have it: a beatiful, clean bill summary report with exactly 1,000 bills. WooHoo.

You have entered 1,000 Bills worth $4,273

Your State Rank in North Carolina is: 140 out of 2,624 [94.7]

12/01/2006:

A new first: I got my first strap of $1 bills on Wednesday (11/29). I resolved to just let the geek in me out and tell the banker about Wheres George if she asked what I wanted all those singles for, but she never batted an eye. Oh, well, next time, I'm sure.

I entered all 100 bills that night. That led to several new records:

  • 102 bills entered in one day (though I couldn't get the last six in before the stroke of midnight, so by the database, only 96 went in on that day - still a record);
  • 273 bills entered in a month;
  • and my fastest hit yet - I spent several of the strap bills the following morning on gas, and two of those got hit soon after, for a first hit in less than 9 hours, 24 minutes (plus two previously entered 5s got hit, for my second highest hit day)
  • Who knows: with all the crazy stats folks track on this sight, there's probably a bunch of other records I set without even knowing it. And my George Score soared over 670. All in all, a good day of georging. (Well, except for the DDOS attack that brought down the DNS servers. ) Now, if form holds, I've got 2 weeks till my next hit.

Oh, and I discovered where Hank keeps the smilies. Its all down hill from here...

    Today's stats:

You have entered 888 Bills worth $4,090
Bills with hits: 51 Total hits: 60
Hit rate: 5.74% Slugging Percentage: 6.76% (total hits/total bills)

(out of 48,886 current users with a George Score. [87.3 Percentile])
Your State Rank in North Carolina is: 144 out of 2,609 [94.5]

    11/21/2006:

I got my first stamp today. I went basic - a one-liner from stamp-connection that says "Track this bill at www.WheresGeorge.com". I like to add little catch-phrases to my bills based on mood, so I'll probably continue to add those hand-written, as the spirit moves. I EMed three ones and a five to initiate it. Here's to a whole new era of easy marking. :)

edit: At lunch I cashed one of my birthday checks for $25 and got it in ones. The teller asked if it was going to be my poker money. I just smiled and didn't answer. I'm such a dweeb. Should be interesting to see how I handle it when I ask for a strap. :)

    11/20/2006:

What an amazing weekend! On Saturday, the Buckeyes win the biggest game of the century against Michigan; I got 5 hits in one day on Sunday, breaking a 16-day drought and my record number of hits in a day (by 2); and Sunday evening the San Diego Chargers pulled off another come-from-behind win in Denver, breaking all kinds of records, including the only team in NFL history to come back from 17 or more points behind in two games in a row. Can anyone say "Superbowl"? Oh, yeah, the hits... Brings my George Score up by 9 points, and I cracked the 130s in my state ranking (though a lot of that is inactive Georgers, so it could go backwards at any time). Here's the score:

    11/17/2006:

Today I enterend my 356th bill for this year, which means I have now entered exactly as many bills this year as I did in all the previous (almost) three years I've been georging. And there's still a month and a half left in the year. And, I ordered a stamp earlier this week, and I got a $100 check for my birthday which I'm going to cash for a strap of ones. Can I reach 1000 bills by the end of the year? I doubt it, but we'll see. Still bummed: no hits since the 3rd. All these entries, and nothing in return. My hit rate is really in the tank. :(

    God bless our veterans.

My George Score hit 650 today (well, technically, yesterday, but the numbers always seem to update slow). That's a 25 point increase in the last 2+ months of renewed activity. Woohoo. I guess. I also hit 146th place in the state for the first time. But that's pretty fluid, based on the inactivity of better Georgers than I. No hits since my last update. Bah. (I'm in a bit of a George funk - can you tell?)

You have entered 665 Bills worth $3,444
Bills with hits: 42 Total hits: 51

    11/6/2006:

So, recent milestones: 113 bills entered for October - a new high. Three hits on 11/3 put me over the 50-hit mark (51). I drove to St. Petersberg, FL, on 11/1 and sprinkled a couple dozen bills along the way, mostly on the return trip on 11/4. My George score has gone up 20 points in the last month, but my state rank hasn't budged. Would you all kindly stop entering bills for a while? :) I guess I have gone up almost 300 spots on the overall list, so that's something - just a little harder to relate to. Current scoreboard, for my future edification:

You have entered 647 Bills worth $3,350
Bills with hits: 42 Total hits: 51
Hit rate: 6.49% Slugging Percentage: 7.88% (total hits/total bills)

Your State Rank in North Carolina is: 149 out of 2,587 [94.2]

    10/23/2006:

My 600th bill, and my 100th bill for 10/06, my most prolific Georging month (and counting) to date. Here's the scoreboard:

Passed $3000 in bills entered. For whatever that isn't worth...

    9/29/2006:

Woohoo! My 500th bill entered today. That's sort of a milestone, isn't it? Here are my stats as of this day:

    9/20/2006:

George is such a tease!!! Gets me all excited with that triple hit day, and now its been a two week dry spell. C'mon, George, gimme some lovin'! (I mean, you know, in the bill hits way, not in, you know, that way.)

    9/6/2006:

I just got one of the fastest "real" hits I've ever had - four days and 400+ miles traveled. Cool. (I had one hit within less than a day once, but that was a bill I put in an office soda coffer, which someone picked up as change - I don't really count that as really having been in circulation.)

Update: Wow! 3 hits in one day (9/6/2006), and all from different batches. That's quite a record for me. Also got a hit on a one-day-old bill, beating the "fastest hit" from the first one today.

    9/1/2006:

Its been a while. 2 1/2 years and a continent away from where I started. I moved from San Diego, CA, to Western North Carolina last summer. Had "dreams" of sprinkling WheresGeorge bills all across the country during our trek, but things were too frantic. :( Been on another posting spree the last month or so. Still no match for the heavyweights with 10s of thousands of bills posted. But I'm approaching 500 bills, and have a score of 625. Not bad, I guess.

    4/11/2004:

Update: Hey, 1 hit from that big batch last month. Not huge, but its a start...

    3/19/2004:

I entered my first bill in May, 2003. It had www.wheresgeorge.com written all around the border. It was quite an impressive marking effort. Alas, when I entered it, there was no previous entry. :( I got into it, mildly, for a few months, and entered maybe 200 bills. But when I got very few hits, I got discouraged - it took 5 months and almost 200 bills entered just to get 10 hits and earn a George Score. So, except for a few occasions, I pretty much dropped it. This week, for some odd reason, I happened to accumulate 23 ones, so I thought I'd do another mass posting and see what happens...
